Importance of Istikhara in marriage decisions

We all know that marriage is a very big decision in a person’s life, and it is a bond in which husband and wife support each other throughout their lives and face every situation together.

Therefore, it becomes very important that if you are going to spend your life with someone and are going to marry that person, then you must do Istikhara because through Istikhara, you can find out how your life will be with that person and whether that person is right for you or not.

By practising istikhaara, you receive guidance from Allah Ta’ala, which shapes your future and protects you from wrong choices.

It also helps you find inner peace, eliminates negative thoughts, and bestows Allah’s blessings upon you, deepening your faith in Allah Ta’ala.

“The one who makes Istikhara will never be disappointed, and the one who consults others will never regret.”

Tabarani, Al-Mu’jam al-Awsat

What is Istikhara Dua for Marriage?

The Istikhara Dua for Marriage is a special prayer that helps us seek guidance from Allah Ta’ala.

Especially when it comes to a marriage proposal, Istikhara guides us to what is appropriate and what is not.

The word Istikhara means “to seek goodness”.

In this dua, a believer prays to Allah Ta’ala for guidance for their life and future, and to keep them away from things that could harm them.

If you wish to perform this dua, you can do so after praying two rak’ahs and then reciting a specific dua taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad.

This dua is not limited to marriage but can also be useful in marriage-related decisions that involve emotions, family opinions, and future responsibilities.

This dua helps you trust Allah Ta’ala’s wisdom and gain clarity before entering into marriage.

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

“The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘If any of you has a decision to make, let him pray two Rak’ahs and then say the supplication of Istikhara.’”

[Sunan Ibn Majah]

Istikhara Dua for Marriage

The decision to marry is one of the biggest in a person’s life.

Many people often feel unsure about whether something might go wrong if they confirm their relationship with a loved one or whether this person is right for them.

Therefore, Islam encourages the practice of Istikhara (religious prayer). The Istikhara (religious prayer) for marriage allows one to discern what is right for them and what is not.

It offers Allah (God) to guide your heart, making your decision easier and helping you avoid potential pitfalls.

Therefore, this dua can be recited in three ways, depending on your preference and comfort:

In Arabic: The original and most authentic text from the Prophet

English Translation: So you understand the meaning while reciting it

“O Allah, I seek Your guidance [in making a choice] through Your knowledge and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You from Your great bounty. You are capable and I am not, you know and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know this matter (mention the person) is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my life, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. If You know it is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my life, then turn it away from me, turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it.”

Transliteration: For those who cannot read Arabic but want to pronounce it correctly
